Today, I bring to you the MUSEUMS OF COIMBATORE!!! Did you know there are around 9 museums in Coimbatore! Buckle up! There can be even more! Here are the 9 that I spotted out!
The G.D.Naidu museum and industrial exhibition:
The G.D.Naidu museum and industrial exhibition in Coimbatore contains an impressive collection of various electrical/electronic/scientific devices and gadgets that has been in existence since very early years to the recent times. In fact, one visit to this museum would make you familiar with the different types of film cameras, projection TV’s, ball point pens, floppy disks, calculators, type writers, PA systems, printers, and many many more devices that were used right from 1930’s/40’s till today!
GEDEE Car Museum:
The main objective of the museum is that the students and general public, who see these cars, should also learn about technology behind it and the person responsible for such innovations, either in design or engineering or in workmanship etc. and this museum tries to give as much information as in necessary, to highlight the men behind the marvels. It is the desire of Sri G D Naidu that students should get inspired by these examples and he started thinking that if in the late 18th century people could create such wonders even without much facility and technology advancement why can’t they think of such revolutionary ideas?
TNAU insect museum:
The museum is aimed to create interest and arouse the scientific curiosity about the natural world in students, the future torch bearers of science. It also will serve as a reference point on insect identification for researchers and all-know-about insect knowledge hub for the general public while farmers also will be benefited on crop pests, their damage symptoms and natural enemies. The museum is endowed with insects in different art forms such as wood carvings, embroideries etc. The museum is unique of its own kind displaying insects in a thematic style along with facts making it more educative and user friendly. Visuals and text in the touch screens will reveal fascinating stories about insects. Live butterflies in a natural setting, termite mounds, bees of different kind and variety, and insect eating plants are also present. An amusing section present, on knowing your personality through insects will make you grin wider by the end of the visit! Prized collectibles are also available from the Museum shop. The doors of the museum are open to one and all with ramp facilities.
Gass Forest Museum:
Gass Forest Museum is a government run natural history museum situated at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Gass Forest Museum (GFM) in Coimbatore is a destination with a difference. This is a natural history museum and is the first institution in India to house exhibits related to forestry. This government run museum is located in the verdant Forest College Campus on Cowley Brown Road. It is housed in a heritage building that is over a century old.
Tamil Nadu Police Museum:
The Tamil Nadu Police Museum on State Bank Road in Coimbatore is a part of the history of State police. Among the exhibits depicting the history of State police, the museum boasts of articles like uniforms of the police in olden days, insignias, police medals and a sword gifted by late Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran praising the services of police. A handwritten note in English left by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at the inauguration of All Women Police Station at Gandhipuram on January 27, 2003 has also found place in this category.
Rosary Museum:
Located in a quiet residential locality of Annai Velankanni Nagar at Sowripalayam in Coimbatore is a museum exclusively for rosaries which could be the first of such kind not just in the city but in the country as well. The museum exhibits rosaries made of various materials such as seeds, petals, flowers, glass and precious stones. It has also collected a three-foot long rosary from Italy which is made from stones that were collected from the birth place of Lord Jesus and also has the oldest rosary called `catacomb' made of ivory that was hand-made and is believed to be from the second century.
Government Museum:
Right opposite to the VOC Zoo & Park, and in the Nehru stadium complex, the Government Museum is located among the shops. The museum has a collection of old coins from various countries, articles made using wood and bamboo used by the tribals, zoological specimen, and various articles made and used by people who had lived in and around Coimbatore region. It also has a section on how the characters (Script) used in Tamil Language evolved over the centuries.
Regional science park:
Regional science park for children, a 6.53 acres science park near CODISSIA fair grounds. This is the fourth science centre/park in the state next to Chennai, Trichy, and Vellore. The total cost of the project is Rs 8.5 crore. It is a gift for the city's science enthusiasts. Children can have fun while learning and understanding science. It has a special textile gallery to expose children to textile technology, considering the rich textile tradition of the city. The Fun Science Gallery has exhibits to impart knowledge on basic science.
The textile museum:
The textile museum of Kasthuri Sreenivasan Trust, Culture Centre, Avinashi Road brings together a chronological portrayal of the growth of the textile industry. Models of charkhas, spinning and knitting machines, a wide selection of stitches, weaves and knits, and displays donated by personal collectors makes the museum a must-see on the itinerary of travellers and textile enthusiasts.
